Saint Paisios of Mount Athos
1924-1994
“He wrestled with demons, conversed with saints, befriended the wild animals, and aided his fellow man …“
Saint Paisios of Mount Athos is perhaps the greatest and most revered Elder of the Orthodox Church of our time. Even though he lived the monastic life in obscurity on the Holy Mountain of Athos in northern Greece, he became a shining light for thousands of faithful who flocked to see him. His life, miracles, and teachings continue to touch the hearts of people throughout the world to this day. Unquestionably, this present biography (written by his spiritual disciple Elder Isaac), which is the most authoritative account of his life, will inspire readers forevermore.
Excerpts from the text:
[In the words of the Saint]: “You should know that the young people today who remain pure will be counted among the martyrs of our Church on the day of Judgment.”
“The Elder naturally emphasized reverence and neatness in one’s handiwork, but he saw it as a help in the spiritual life rather than as an end in itself. ‘In the end,’ he would say, ‘our goal as monks is not to become monks who chant well or who are good craftsman, but proper monks – angels. This way, your work is blessed, and the people who will receive it will be blessed. That is why people prefer handicrafts from monasteries – to get a blessing’.”
Written by Hieromonk Isaac (of blessed memory), a spiritual son of Saint Paisios from the Holy Synodeia of the Hermitage of the Resurrection, Kapsala, Mount Athos.
